shogi move parser

I’ve decided to write a little script using JS that reads a Japanese notation for a move in shogi and tries to convert it into English.

• Since the original publishing of this page, I have contacted the developers of the 10ten browser add-on to add a shogi move parsing functionality, using this JavaScript code as a prototype. They have implemented such functionality, and I recommend anyone who is learning Japanese, or finds themselves in need of reading an occasional Japanese text, to install and use that add-on. It functions as a sort of “hover dictionary” where whenever your mouse cursor is hovering over a piece of Japanese text, the appropriate word’s dictionary meanings will be displayed (covering standard Japanese, slang terminology, pop culture terms, etc.). Some knowledge of Japanese grammar is still recommended.
